New Rodeo Movie In The Works

Monday February 16, 2004
It seems that the retirement of Charmayne James, the 11-time World Champion Barrel Racer, won't be the last we hear of this legendary rodeo competitor.

According to Josh Spector of the Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema has purchased the rights to her life story and a feature film is in the works.

The film, to be titled "Scamper", after Charmayne's astounding hall-of-fame barrel horse, will tell the story of the relationship between Charmayne and Scamper on their quest to become the most successful barrel racing team in rodeo history. The movie climaxes in the dramatic winning of Charmayne's first world championship title in 1984, when she was only 14 years old.

Jeanne Rosenburg, author of 1979's Black Stallion, and other features, has written the script. A director has yet to be attached.

According to Chris Godsick of New Line, the movie may be completed "within the year."

Charmayne is intimately invovled in the project and she posts regular updates on her website, www.charmaynejames.com.

The casting has yet to be done and it may be a national casting call. So to all you young, blond-hair, cowgirl actors, check Charmayne's website regularly. And please let me know if any of you get involved with this project in any way.

I will keep an eye on this exciting news as best I can. Good Luck!

I think that it’s great that you are making a movie about Charmayne James and Scamper! I’m a barrel racer myself, and when I first started out she was the first barrel racer that I had heard of so she’s what helps me get through the tough world of barrel racing everyday. What would we do without her. God-Bless- Erin Diefendorf

Ok I love the fact that this movie is right up my alley & have been dying to audition for it, but it has been 3 years now that charmayne had last posted anything about it and that kind of makes you wonder if this work is still in progress?

(12) Pro Barrel Racer says:

Is the movie still up? Anyways I’m Carrie and I’ve been riding horses since my mom could put me on one. I’ve been barrel racing seriously for the past 2 yrs and have accomplished alot. I consider myself a good rider. My horse I’m on now is running 1d so I know how to ride. I am also working with another horse who I swear could be Scamper if she was a boy. “Bailey” is a solid bay and looks exactly like him. Anyways I won’t sit around telling you why I should be the star. I love Charmayne and it gives me chills thinking about how much he accomplished. I would be honored to play her. Your going to need a girl who knows how to ride and lets face it, I know how. I compete at rodeos and large barrel races and I know how to ride a horse to their full potential. I’m 16 yrs and have light brown hair. If I was chose I would dye it blonde. Horses are my life and I would love to play the part of Charmayne. So if your looking for someone to take this movie to the next level and help make it a hit… pick me. :D

(13) Dori Borlik says:

HI!!! My name is Dori, and I am a barrel racer. I am 15 with blond hair and have similarities with Charmayne’s look. I am VERY good at acting and I am a great horse girl. I know a lot about riding, barrel racing, and acting. I would really appreciate it if someone from the audition panel emailed me! cash2fast28@embarqmail.com
