Jake Barnes and Clay O'Brien Cooper: Kings Of Roping
Wednesday June 30, 2004
Clay O'Brien Cooper and Jake Barnes defeated Speed Williams and Rich Skelton in a 10-head shoot-out team roping. The match took place on Tuesday, June 22 at the $1 million Reno Rodeo Invitational Team Roping.
The winner-take-all prize was $10,000, which the classy winners donated back to the Reno Rodeo Foundation, the charitable organization of the Reno Rodeo.
Which, according to their website, "is committed to enhancing and enriching the lives of northern Nevadan families by aiding children with extraordinary needs, building community partnerships, and providing scholarships to the University of Nevada, Reno."
How cool is that? I'm telling you folks (nothin' you don't already know), cowboys and cowgirls are the greatest athletes, and people on the planet.

My brother and I were big fans of you Clay. Well my brother was the bigger fan. I was just there to watch because he had your videos and I was forced to watch because that was the only tv in the house. My brother devoted his life to team roping. He was a good heeler and if he had more time in his life he would have been the greatest. In my book he was the greatest, he had the talent and he had the drive. Dewayne passed on in November of 05. He was my rock he was the person that I am now.
The funny thing is I don’t know how to ride a horse. I grew up with him roping and my father roping but they were men and I was the little sister and my fathers only little girl. So riding horses was out of the question it was too dangerous. But I was dragged along to so many ropings it was surprising that I didn’t get into the cycle. But I had proud men that didn’t want me to get involved. My brother on the other hand loved watching you and learning from you. He would be the greatest he had talent that no one could learn he had an eye for heeling, and when to throw the rope at the exact moment. He was in my eyes the professional. We, as in my father and I would like to hold a memorial roping for him because this is what he loved to do and it was his destiny. We hoped that you can get involved and help us in this journey and help us create a beautiful farewell for him. Please I ask you to email me back Clay obrien my email is trish_eads@yahoo.com
