Is Matt Austin Out?
Tuesday October 24, 2006
Apparently the reigning PRCA Bull Riding World Champion may be injured and miss the Xtreme Bulls event in Indianapolis, according to Donnie Gay's blog over at the Xtreme Bulls / ESPN Website. Austin currently sits at number two in the standings.
More from Donnie Gay:
"I'm still picking Austin to win the whole thing if his health holds up. It's his to win, or lose, and he knows how to win a championship, so he's not going to be thinking, 'Can I do this?' He knows he can do it, and these other guys know he can do it. It's right there for the taking for Matt. But there's so many others who could jump into the spotlight. Matt's got a good lead and he's riding good, but you just can't count anybody out with Indianapolis on the horizon and the Wrangler NFR right around the corner. And now if Matt ends up missing some events, you just don't know what's going to happen. You can close the gap pretty quick if you can get hot."
I hope this injury isn't a season ender (although it looks like it might be). To go the whole year only to have to opt out when it's time to make the big money is every cowboy's worst nightmare.

“The first time I tried to ride a bull calf I was knocked unconscious.”

Rolland Love Speaks About The American Royal and My Gold Buckle:
I wrote about the junior SuperBull / Riding Championship because I rode bulls when I was young. The difference between me and my character is I got bucked off every time. After I moved to Kansas City where the American Royal is such a grand tradition, I became intrigued with the idea that what began in a tent at the Stockyards in 1899 became a world class event. I wrote the story years ago thinking I would develop it into a novel, one thing led to another and it found a happy home as an Amazon Short.
Matt Austin is a very good bull rider that can amass several NFR buckles if he can stay healthy. He rides a lot like Donnie Gay and sticks it on the bulls. How many NFR buckles will he end up, anybody’s guess. Wish him the best of luck.

Apparently he tore muscles in his groin and abdomen while riding the bull Showtime in Texas. According to ESPN Dr. Tandy Freeman diagnosed it as a sports hernia.
