barrier

By Ralph Clark, About.com

Definition: The barrier is a breakaway rope that is pulled across the roping chutes. It is designed to give the steer or calf a head start out into the arena making the competition more difficult. Breaking the barrier (breaking the rope or leaving too early) results in a penalty added to the overall time of the competitor.
Examples: Joe Beaver broke the barrier which will result in a 10 second penalty.
