dally, dallie, daly

From Ralph Clark, for About.com

Definition: Anglicized version of the Spanish dar la vuelta, which means to go around or turn over.

The term to dally as used in rodeo is the action of wrapping a lasso around a saddle horn, after a calf or steer has been roped.

Interesting Fact:Ropers need to be careful when they dallying, because getting a finger caught (usually the thumb) between the rope and saddle horn will pop it off easily.

An example of this happened at the 2005 NFR when team roper Jake Barnes lost his thumb in Round 5 due to a missed dally attempt.
Alternate Spellings: dallie, daly
Examples: Jake Barnes lost his thumb in Round 5 due to a missed dally attempt.
