The Rodeo Trail: Part 3

Living On the Rodeo Road...

From Rachel Kelderman, for About.com

Rodeo Queen Boot Camp Group

'The Gang' at Boot Camp

My weekend in Utah.

I had the opportunity to attend the 7th annual Rodeo Queen Boot Camp in Ogden, Utah. The camp is put on every year by a wonderful staff made up of veterinarians, rodeo cowboys, queen mothers, professional horse trainers, salon stylists, photographers, modeling coaches, past Miss Rodeo Utah’s, Past Miss Rodeo Idaho’s, high school rodeo queens and two former Miss Rodeo Americas. The staff is excellent and gives each and every girl the opportunity to learn, ask questions and be critiqued as she prepares for future Rodeo Queen Pageants.

This was my first time attending Boot Camp. My mother and I drove from my home north of Denver, up to Wyoming and across to Utah. It was a beautiful drive and we enjoyed listening to our satellite radio. About 7.5 hours later we arrived. My roommate was Nicole Hewit who is Miss Rodeo Washington 2005. The Camp began Thursday evening with animal science and dinner. We were divided into age groups and had the experience of hands-on learning. We got to get in a bronc saddle, tie a calf, practice carrying flags and work on the proper way to mount a horse. Hands on experience is so much better then just reading it in a book or watching someone else do it.

Friday morning began with advice for interviews and how to dress as a queen, we also covered how to speak in public and answer impromptu questions. Hat care and modeling were also included. By late afternoon each girl had a one-on-one interview with a past Miss Rodeo America, two past Miss Rodeo Utah’s and the current National High School Rodeo Queen. This was so great for me because these girls are close to my age, which is something I don't regularly experience in a pageant. The interviews were video taped and used later for critiquing. Friday night we had a Luau themed dinner and fashion show followed by a clothing swap, and I just had to buy a few things.

Saturday was the last day of the clinic and it began with a banquet where each girl modeled, gave a speech and answered an impromptu question. This was also video taped. A photo shoot was included in the clinic and each girl had make-up touches with a professional photo shoot and the chance to keep the photos. The day wrapped up with critique stations. Staff members watched the video tapes with each girl and gave their professional opinion and advice.

I made friends with girls from neighboring states and look forward to being title holders with them.
There is an amazing future in the world of rodeo queens, and I am proud of all the girls and would enjoy each of them representing rodeo. I had a great and very educational time at Boot Camp and will be attending again!
