Manifest Destiny

From Ralph Clark, for About.com

Definition: A governmental policy of the United States in the mid-1800's. Used to justify the annexation of territory for the benefit of the U.S.

"...to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our multiplying millions."

As it applies to rodeo, Manifest Destiny was the catalyst for expansion that gave rise to large cattle outfits west of the Mississippi River, which blossomed into the short lived 'Age of the Cowboy.'
