Day 3 - On the Trail
TuesdaySINGLE-MOM DROVER EXPERIENCED BEYOND HER YEARS
By Jennifer Durnan
Amber Goddard, 26 of Sparks, Nev., brings a wealth of solid cowboy experience to the 15th Annual Reno Rodeo Cattle Drive. This is the second year that Goddard has participated as a Drover, a leader who helps to teach the apprentice cowboys how to ride and drive cattle. She has been around horses since she was about seven and has a natural love for them. Currently, Goddard rides Misty, a mare that she describes as her "soul mate."
"She's really my companion," said Goddard. "We get along great. People call us the bubble girls because we are kind of absorbed in each other a lot of the time."
Autumn, Goddard's nine year-old daughter, can hardly wait until it is her turn to attend the Cattle Drive. She loves to ride with her mom and Goddard is enjoying watching Autumn learn.
Goddard finds the experience of being a Drover incredibly rewarding. "It is so rewarding to watch someone who has never ridden before and see them learn to be confident around horses."
"The best part of the cattle drive is the people," said Goddard. "There's nothing like it. Everyone out here has a heart of gold. Everyone here is so compassionate and kind."
