2005 RENO RODEO WRANGLER SUMMER TOURTuesday Night Performance June 21, 2005Tuesday night at the Reno Rodeo was fan appreciation night, and it did it not disappoint. With temperatures even more comfortable and excitement on the rise, Tuesday night promised a great rodeo experience for fans and competitors alike.
I thought that Monday nights crowd would be hard to top in enthusiasm and excitement, but Tuesdays crowd was on to be reckoned and with some wild rodeo action, an arena marriage proposal, and some of the funniest competition I've seen in the Double Mugging, I would say they had a lot to cheer about. From the first shot out of the chutes the action would prove intense as the bareback riders put together a slew of qualified rides. Rowdy Buechner (Sandpoint, ID.) spurred his way to the lead with 82 points, while 3rd generation cowboy Heath Ford (Greeley, CO.) scored an 81 on board Spring Fling. The steer wrestlers on the other hand had a rough go of it as the barrier picked off the 'big men' of rodeo. The first of two clean runs was made by Brad Gleason (Touchet, WA.), who won the round with a 4.1. The second was put together by Kyle Whitaker (Chambers, NE.), to take second place with a 6.2. For the bronc riders, Tuesday night at the Reno Rodeo is always a rough one. New broncs with a lot of buck are loaded up in the chutes. The highlight of the night was Cody 'Hot Sauce' DeMoss (Crowville, LA.) and his ride aboard Rolling Cloud. After a spectacular battle and a close buck-off at the whisle, rodeo fans were on the edge of their seats as the Wrangler Rodeo Officials conferred, then gave Cody the thumbs up. DeMoss had made the whistle and 85 points. After the rodeo Cody would proclaim, "I'm glad they keep stopwatches back there." Cody has yet to take home the coveted Reno Rodeo trophy spurs, this just might be his year. Taking second in the round would be Matt Marvel (Battle Mountain, NV.) with an 81. Marvel along with fellow Nevadans Max Filippini (also of Battle Mountain who captured 3rd in a three way tie), Joe Heguy (Elko), Ross Wines (Ruby Valley), Jess Jones (Spring Creek) represented how the brush country of Nevada turns out some top quality bronc riders. Another great event that is a staple at the Reno Rodeo is Double Mugging, and Tuesday night's performance was no exception. The Hawaiian cowboys couldn't take it to the mainlanders this time as some local teams proved that they could hang with the islanders. "It's the wildest event in Hawaii," said Stock Contractor Cotton Rosser. I have to agree with him. After several back flips, tramplings, and draggings the Flying U team of Reno Rosser (Marysville, CA.) and Jerome Schneeberger (Ponca City, OK.) managed to 'mug' their way into the gold with a 43.3 second time. In second place the Local Yokals team of Jody Adkins (Reno, NV.) and Bruce Hill (Fallon, NV.) posted the a time of 1 minute 30 seconds. Other great runs followed from Stran Smith in the tie-down roping and from Laurie Sutton in the barrel racing. The bull riding race is shaping up to be a good one as the riders have trouble conquering Flying U's killer stock. Local boy Jake Wade thrilled the audience with an awesome ride aboard Fire Bird. The Reno Rodeo is part of the PRCA Wrangler ProRodeo Summer Tour and is the first stop in that series. Contestants will compete in two rounds of competition (Bull Riders compete in one) before the Final or Tour Round on Saturday. The top 12 total scores and times in each event will compete in the Final Tour Round. Rodeo action continues tomorrow with Wednesdays Performance and through the rest of the week to the final round on Saturday, and just in case you missed it, read about Monday Nights Performance.
