Hopeful cowboys and cowgirls around the country are anxiously awaiting the official, year-end standings to see if they've secured a spot in the National Finals Rodeo, richest rodeo in the United States. The 2012 rodeo season officially ended with the San Bernardino, California rodeo held on September 20th, and many events came right down to the wire. While the PRCA allows competitors two weeks to file any appeals, the unofficial standings were presented on October 1st.
Team roping was by far one of the most exciting races this year, and the battle for the 15th spot in the heeling category came down to a mere $3. Dakota Kirchenschlager bested fellow competitor Kollin VonAhn by a margin of $3. When asked about losing out on a spot in the NFR, VonAhn remarked, "Whether it was $3 or $300, it's all the same. For 10 minutes when I found out I missed it by $3 I could not believe it. Then I was over it. I could have made it by $1. I'm fine with it. This year's plan didn't work. We'll come up with a new plan and be ready to go next year."
Steer wrestling was another hotly contested event, with Bray Armes surpassing former World Champion Jason Miller for the 15th spot by a measly $55. Tie-down roper Clif Cooper will join his brother Tuf Cooper at this year's Finals, beating out 16th place finisher Ace Sloan just $298.
