Friday night saw a lot of pink shirts as cowboys and cowgirls stepped up for a good cause to support breast cancer awareness. Matt Austin officially clinches the bull riding title and 16-time World Champion Jim Shoulders paid a visit to check on his sport. It'll be no time to relax tonight as the roughstock pens are the toughest in the final rounds and only 3 chances remain for the timed-event competitors to make something happen. It was good cause and good rodeo in Round 8.
Bareback Riding:
Cimmarron Gerke 87.5 on Awesome (Wayne Vold).
Cody DeMers 83.5 on Sheep Tick (Harry Vold).
Kelly Timberman and Will Lowe split with 83-points.
Average Leader- Kelly Timberman 669.5 / 8
Standings Leader- Will Lowe gains a little ground over Ryan Gray after his buck off.
Steer Wrestling:
Stockton Graves turn up the heat with a blazing 3.3 second run.
Dean Gorsuch bulldogs into second with a time of 3.4.
A 3-way split for third showed that none of the steer wrestlers have given up. Bob Lummus, Garrett Nokes, and the amazing Lee Graves all stopped the clock at 3.5.
5-time Canadian Champion Lee Graves has won as much at the NFR as he had in the whole regular season.
Average Leader- Lee Graves 30.30 / 8
Standings Leader- Graves extends his lead over Jason Lahr by $10,000. Its his to win in my opinion. Graves also now becomes a possible contender in the All-Around.
Team Roping:
Speed Williams and Rich Skelton win with 3.70.
Wade Wheatley and Kyle Lockett in second with 3.90.
Steve Purcella and Britt Bockius in third with 4.30.
Average Leaders- Tee Woolman and Corey Petska (62.10 / 8) take over the lead after former average holders Shane Schwenke and Jhett Johnson break the barrier. Ouch!
Standings Leaders- Clay Tryan stills holds the header lead but Kory Koontz leads Clays partner Patrick Smith by over $2,000 in the heeler standings. This year could be an interesting one with gold buckle winners in the team roping from two different teams.
The day money and best runs will determine the champions in this event.
Saddle Bronc Riding:
Last chance on the 'easy' broncs before the final two pens which will be the toughest.
Billy Etbauer makes his third round win with 87.5 on Coffee Break (Kesler).
Jeffery Willert broke the saddle bronc single season-earnings record held by Glen ONeill with his 85-point ride on Round Robin (Bar T).
Cody Wright places third with 84.5 on Elvis (Harry Vold).
Average Leader- Rod Warren is the only to who has ridden all his broncs. 632.5 / 8
Standings Leader- Jeffery Willert with $240,560 in earnings to date.
Tie-down Roping:
Matt Shiozawa wins his second straight with 7.20 seconds.
Stan Smith got really lucky (his calf got up right after the 6 second check) and captured second with 7.30.
Fred Whitfield gets on the board with 7.50 and third place.
Average Leader- Ryan Jarrett takes over the average lead (72.50 / 8) after Blair Burks heartbreaking miss in this round.
Standings Leader- Fred Whitfield $147,706 lead over Stran Smiths $142,672.
Barrel Racing:
Linda Vick and Hollywood win with 13.95 and their first round victory.
Kelly Kaminski and Rocky win second with 14.05.
Talina Bird makes the board in third with 14.08.
Average Leader- Liz Pinkston and Doc 113.68 / 8
Standings Leader- Kelly Kaminski leads over Linda Vick who moves up, by less than $1,000.
This will go to the final round no doubt.
Bull Riding:
Wesley Silcox makes a fantastic ride on Keller Special (Big Bend) 86.5.
Dustin Elliott on Prime (Four L) with 82.5-points.
Clayton Foltyn on Jammin Jimmy (Lancaster and Pickett Rodeo) 79.5.
Steve Woolsey on Kings Court at 87-points.
Average Leader- Steve Woolsey 489 / 6
Matt Austin will take the gold buckle back to Wills Point, Texas. Congrats Matt!
